Commonly Asked Asbestos Questions

An employer or self-employed person must obtain the services of a competent person to ensure that all materials identified as, or assumed to be, asbestos-containing material, as contemplated in regulation 3, are entered into an inventory of asbestos in place, which is kept at the workplace or premises.

The process for identifying asbestos in a building or facility typically involves hiring a trained and certified asbestos professional to conduct a thorough inspection. Samples may be taken and analyzed in a laboratory to confirm the presence of asbestos.

An inventory of asbestos-containing materials is created by identifying and documenting the location and type of materials that contain asbestos. This information is recorded in a database.

The assessment of asbestos-containing materials involves evaluating the condition and potential risk of exposure to the materials. This includes determining the likelihood of disturbance, the accessibility of the materials, and the potential for fiber release.

A management plan for handling and disposing of asbestos includes procedures for properly handling, storing, and disposing of asbestos materials, as well as measures to prevent exposure to asbestos fibers.

Labeling and awareness training for employees and contractors includes providing information about the hazards of asbestos, proper handling and storage procedures, and emergency response procedures in the event of an asbestos release.
